HANDBOOK INSTALLATION
=====================
The online handbook provides comprehensive instructions on using your handheld and the Palm applications that come with it. Open the Palm folder on your computer, then open the Documentation folder, and then double-click the Handbook.pdf file.

If the handbook file does not open, then you need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader from your Palm Desktop CD-ROM. Open the Adobe Acrobat folder and double-click the Acrobat Reader Installer icon.

PALM DESKTOP SOFTWARE RELEASE NOTES
===================================

Palm Desktop software for Macintosh Version 2.6.2 includes the following:

- Native USB HotSync Manager Support
Palm Desktop software includes native USB support for HotSync. Simply plug in your USB cradle and install Palm Desktop software. No additional HotSync setup is required.

- Installation of Files to Expansion Cards
The installation component of HotSync has been updated to include the Destination option. For handhelds that support expansion cards, you can choose to install files to either your handheld or to an expansion card.

USB SUPPORT WITH THE PALMCONNECT(R) USB KIT
============================================

Palm Desktop software also includes native USB support for Palm handhelds with serial connectors (instead of Universal connectors). Simply install Palm Desktop software, select the PalmConnect USB option in the HotSync Software Setup dialog box, plug in your PalmConnect USB-to-serial adapter, and you're set to go!

For more detailed installation instructions, open the PDF file called Getting Started Guide in the Documentation folder on the CD-ROM that came with your PalmConnect USB Kit. If you downloaded this software from our web site, the PDF file is in a separate archive that you can access from the same web page.

Known Problems:
- Avoid making changes in HotSync Manager's HotSync Software Setup dialog box while the USB adapter is unplugged. Results may be unpredictable.

- On some systems, Apple System Profiler reports two PalmConnect devices for each USB adapter connected at start up. This does not affect functionality.

TROUBLESHOOTING
===============

Expansion
---------
- If you are having problems doing HotSync operations with large amounts of data, increase the memory requirements for the Conduit Manager. To do this, locate the Conduit Manager icon in the Palm folder on your hard disk. Highlight the icon and choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Conduit Manager Info dialog, select the Memory option from the Show dropdown menu and increase the value for the Preferred Size.

- To prevent data corruption or accidental damage to an expansion card, wait for the device to completely finish writing to the expansion card before removing the card from the expansion card slot.

- You must perform an initial HotSync operation with your handheld before you can install applications onto an expansion card. The HotSync operation notifies the Palm Desktop Install Tool that the handheld has an expansion card slot that can be used as the destination for installed applications and files.

- Some expansion cards are Read-Only, preventing the installation of applications or data onto those cards. Writable expansion cards have a write-protect latch on the expansion card. Set it to the appropriate state to install or copy to the expansion card.

- For optimal performance, we recommend that you do not install more than 50 applications on a single expansion card.

- HotSync will sync the following file types to these directories on an expansion card:

.prc   /PALM/Launcher/
.pdb   /PALM/Launcher/
.pqa   /PALM/Launcher/
.jpg   /DCIM/
.jpeg  /DCIM
.gif   /DCIM/
.qt    /DCIM/
.mov   /DCIM/
.avi   /DCIM/
.mpg   /DCIM/
.mpeg  /DCIM/
.mp3   /AUDIO/
.wav   /AUDIO/

Other

- If you are having problems doing HotSync operations with large amounts of data, increase the memory requirements for the Conduit Manager. In the Conduit Manager Info dialog, select the Memory option from the Show dropdown menu and increase the value for the Preferred Size.

- When the battery level on the handheld gets very low, some of the handheld's functionality (e.g., beaming or access to the expansion card) is turned off to protect your data. Recharge your device as soon as you receive a low battery warning for continued uninterrupted use of all your handheld features.

- You should complete the entire Welcome application before performing any functions on your handheld. This ensures that your device will be properly calibrated for use.

- Your modem may not support the entire speed range displayed in the Connections Panel. Be sure to check your modem documentation to see what speed your modem supports. You may need to try other speeds if your connections does not seem to be working.

- Some Palm m500 series handhelds have a slider contrast control which allows you to change the lightness or darkness of the display. Should the display ever become too dark or too light to see the slider, use the UP and DOWN scroll buttons to adjust the contrast slider.

- You should connect your USB cradle or cable directly to your Macintosh computer and not to the keyboard to maintain enough power to do HotSync operations.

- Sometimes a HotSync connection cannot be established after the port has been disabled. Try rebooting the Macintosh to reestablish the connection.
